Best Drainage Solutions for Clay Soil

If you live in Pierce County or South King County, you're probably familiar with clay soil. While clay is great for holding nutrients, it is absolutely terrible at draining water. Because the soil particles are so tightly packed together, water simply cannot pass through it quickly.

    The Problem with Clay

During the wet Washington winters, clay soil quickly reaches its saturation point. Once the top layer is full, any additional rain has nowhere to go but up, resulting in standing water, muddy lawns, and flooded patios. Standard landscaping solutions often fail because they don't account for how impermeable clay really is.

Solution 1: Surface Grading and Catch Basins

Because water can't go down through the clay, you have to help it go across. Proper yard drainage involves grading the surface so water naturally flows away from your home. We often install catch basins at low points to quickly swallow heavy surface runoff before it can pool.

    Solution 2: French Drains

To deal with the water that does soak into the top layer of soil, a French drain is essential. By digging a trench, laying a perforated pipe, and backfilling with highly porous gravel, we create a path of least resistance. The water happily flows into the gravel and pipe rather than sitting in the dense clay.
